Alton Ellis was a Jamaican reggae and ska singer who was born on September 1, 1938. He was one of the pioneers of rocksteady, a genre that emerged in Jamaica in the mid-1960s as a response to the fast-paced beat of ska music. Ellis's powerful voice and emotive delivery helped to define the sound of rocksteady, and his songs such as "Girl I've Got a Date" and "Cry to Me" remain some of the most iconic of the genre.
In addition to his work in rocksteady, Ellis also had success with his own brand of soul music. His song "I'm Still in Love with You," which was released in 1962, is a classic example of this style and features a mix of Caribbean rhythms and American soul influences. Throughout his career, Ellis worked with a variety of artists including the Skatalites, the Techniques, and the Uniques, and he was also a prolific songwriter who penned songs for many other reggae and ska musicians.
Alton Ellis passed away on October 26, 2008, but his legacy lives on through his music. He is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Jamaican popular music, and his contributions to the development of rocksteady and soul have had a lasting impact on the genre. Today, his songs remain popular among reggae fans around the world, and he continues to be celebrated as a pioneer of Jamaican music.
