Chicago's music career spanned over four decades, during which he became a legend of jazz. Born Eugene Levander on June 17, 1905, in Kansas City, Missouri, Chicago began his musical journey at the age of 14 when he started playing the violin. He later switched to the saxophone and eventually moved to Chicago (the city) where he developed his unique style.
In the 1930s, Chicago formed his own band, which became known as the South Side Jazz Band. This group was instrumental in creating a new sound that blended traditional jazz with blues and swing. During this period, he also collaborated with other famous musicians like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Chicago's music influenced many notable artists of his time, including Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Chicago continued to innovate and push the boundaries of jazz. He formed a new band called the Grand Orchestra and recorded several albums that showcased his mastery of the saxophone. His contributions to jazz did not go unnoticed; he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master award in 1992. Despite passing away on June 24, 1995, Chicago's legacy lives on through his music, which continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
