Mitch Ryder was an American rock singer and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist of Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. Born William Leslie Levise Jr. on January 26, 1946, in Livonia, Michigan, Ryder's powerful voice and energetic stage presence helped define the sound of the early 1960s garage rock scene.
Ryder's music career began in the mid-1960s with his band The Detroit Wheels, which included drummer Jim McCarty, guitarist Joe Walsh (later of Eagles fame), and bassist Tom Jones. The group's biggest hits were covers of blues and R&B standards, including "Jenny Take a Ride," "Little Miss Queen of New Orleans," and "Devil Man." Ryder's distinctive vocals and the band's blend of rockabilly, doo-wop, and garage rock helped them achieve success in the pre-psychedelic era.
Throughout his career, Mitch Ryder continued to release music and tour with various lineups under his name. In 1970, he released his self-titled solo debut album, which featured a mix of rock, blues, and country influences. Although he never achieved the same level of commercial success as during his Detroit Wheels days, Ryder remained an influential figure in the world of garage rock and was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
